While driving along to the Yamuna river in Delhi, you will come across by the spectacular sight of Akshardham Temple. Viewing this architectural marvel, one can easily understand the inclusion of Akshardham Temple to every tour itinerary of Delhi. Spreading across 100 acres of land, the temple boasts of its grandiose structure, a blend of varied architectural styles that leaves one mesmerised.

Constructed under the aegis of the Bochasanvasi Aksharpurushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS), its inauguration was held in 2005. Its leader Pramush Swamimaharaj who was also the leader of the Swaminarayan sect inaugurated the temple.
The construction of this grand temple took two years to accomplish with a cost of around 2 million. A 141 ft high statue of Swaminarayan enveloped by Gurus of the Swaminarayan sect forms one of its main highlights. An IMAX theatre and a musical fountain enhance the experience to visit the Akshardham. Over 20,000 statues, intricately carved pillars, 9 ornate domes, a majestic Gajendra Pith (plinth of stone elephants), 20 square shikharas and floral motifs form a significant part of this architectural marvel. Entirely built of sandstone and marble, the temple's construction completed without using steel.
Especially designed in accordance with age-old Vedic texts, the temple has been built of pink Rajasthani sandstone and Italian marble.
The hall boasts of featuring the world's smallest animatronic robot in Ghanshyam Maharaj who was the child version of Swaminarayan. Evening boat rides around a man-made river enrich the Akshardham experience.
Another highlight includes The Yagnapurush Kund, India's biggest step well. From here, springs a musical fountain. Undoubtedly, this temple holds an important place as the World's largest comprehensive Hindu temple in the Guinness Book of World Records.
The temple is also enchanced by the well-manicured lawns forming a part of the 'Bharat Upvan' ( the Garden of India).
An ornate external wall, Mandovar is among its key attractions. It boasts of being the only and largest, effortlessly carved wall with dimensions of 611 ft x 31 ft , which is constructed in the last 800 years. The temple receives around one lakh visitors in a week.
