India Gate is a war memorial that has been adding fame to the celebrated Rajpath in New Delhi since long back. Constructed in memory of the 90,000 soldiers who fought World War, I and the Afghan war, this is a popular tourist attraction in Delhi.
This memorial archway gate was positioned by the Royal Highness, the duke of Connaught in the year 1921. The credit of designing the plan goes to Edwin Lutyens. The India Gate also houses a flame beneath the arch that burns day and night to commemorate the soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the December 1971, Indo-Pakistan War.
The flame is referred as ‘Amar Jawan Jyoti’. Today it is customary for the Prime Minister, the President to pay homage at India Gate on occasions of State ceremonies. Even the visiting Guests of State also follow the same.
The 42 meter high India Gate is built of red sandstone. The structure is embedded with the names of India soldiers who died in World War, I and the Afgan wars fighting for the British India.
It is also an ideal picnic spot in Delhi with its verdant green lawns, boat club and Children Park that are around the place. Many visitors come here to refresh themselves from the hustle and bustle of the daily life amidst scenic ambiance. It looks magnificent and spectacular while illuminated with numerous lights in the evening. If you stand near the base of the monument, you can even view the Rashtrapati Bhawan.
