The conception of zoo in Delhi was provided by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. The sketch of this zoo was designed by Major Weinman of Colombo and Carl Hagenbeck of West Germany.

Apart from these, the zoo also provides shelter to more than 200 varieties of trees. The zoo also houses an early 17th century Kos Minar, built by Mughal emperor Jehangir. Visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the zoo through this red sandstone gate.
