The National Handicrafts and Handlooms Museum (NHHM) is commonly known as National Crafts Museum in New Delhi. This is one of the largest crafts museums in India, run by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. The museum gets set on the corner of the Pragati Maidan, facing the Purana Qila complex.
This started in the year 1956 with an objective to showcasing the work of various artisans. The craftsmen from all over India come here to show their skill, ability and talents. Nowadays the museum shows the inordinately affluent handicrafts of craftsman from all over the country, housing to a collection of 20,000 items of folk and tribal arts, crafts and textiles.
The crafts museum befalls divided into the number of galleries based on a theme such as Textile Gallery, Gallery of Courtly Crafts, Tribal and Rural Craft Gallery, Gallery of Popular Culture and many more.
This also displays arts of various villages through wood and stone carving, paper mache, ivories, dolls, toys, puppets, masks, jewelry, decorative metal ware, paintings, terra-cotta, cane and bamboo work. An installed ‘Visual Store’ here is a clear reference for the displayed handicrafts. About 15,000 things are displayed through this Visual Store that presents a great deal of opportunity to admit with diverse crafts of India.
The museum was designed by the famous architect Charles Correa. He tried to recreate the charm of an Indian village street. During the visit to this place, tourist may buy various crafts as a reminder to come here.
