Galta Temple

Galta Temple

Standing gracefully around a pious water tank, Galta offers an impressive series of 250-year-old temples. It owes its holy status mainly due to a freshwater spring that flows continuously through the rocks in the dry valley, keeping two tanks with fresh water.

Troops of monkeys can be seen playing around the tank. Etched in pink hued sandstone, the sacred temple bears testimony to wonderful artistry. Scenes from the life of the royalty and the mischief of Lord Krishna abound the temple etchings.

Lying nearby the temple is the Dhammathali Vipassana Centre. It is one of the 50 centers across the world set up and promotes the system of Vipassana meditation. Beyond the centre, a road leads to the Sisodia Rani-ka-Bagh east of Jaipur.

Landscaped with the beautiful fountains, these gardens form a part of a palace complex that was constructed in the eighteenth century by Jai Singh II. It was done to secure relations with his neighboring Sisodia Rajputs and therefore he got married to the Udaipur princess.

Temples at the back of the gardens are beautifully coated with the sherbet-yellow wash, covering the whole compound - the original color of the Pink City. It is also adorned with naturalistic designs that are open midday as well as early evening for worship.

The natural water spring in the temple complex forms the main attraction of the temple. It is considered auspicious to take a holy dip in the spring and specially on the occasion of Makar Sankranti.

The day of Makar Sankranti signifies the transition of the Sun into Makara rashi on its celestial path. The time also denotes to Sun god's ascendancy and entery into the Northern Hemisphere. It conveys the message of Sun God to human beings that we must head towards light by carving out darkness from our lives. Inside the complex, there is a Sun temple where believers worship the Sun God during the festival.

A visit to the Galta Temple lets you experience the celestial power of the Sun God!
