Govind Devji Temple is a holy shrine of the Lord Krishna and is located in the City Palace complex, between the Chandra Mahal and Badal Mahal. Since this is set in the palace complex it is under the direct control of the royal family. Govind Devji as an incarnation of Lord Krishna was the principal deity of Amber's Kachawaha Dynasty. Initially, the idol of the temple became enshrined in Vrindavan of Uttar Pradesh.
As per history , Govind Dev Ji once appeared in the dream of Raja Sawai Jai Singh and asked him to take his idol from Vrindavan to Jaipur. Then he brought the idol and placed it in the City Palace complex of Jaipur.
Janmashtmi, the birthday of Lord Krishna, is a special event and is renowned forits pomp and splendour here. Here the various forms of ritual and offerings, are the religious activity throughout the day. Nowadays Govind Dev temple is an elite site for Hindu religious worship.
This is one of the most important shrines in India after Vrindavan. The Lord in the shrine is offered Aarti and Bhog seven times a day. Huge crowd of devotees gather here during the festival of Janmashtami that is celebrated here with great ebullience.
