A grand gateway lies at Fatehpur Sikri, Buland Darwaza once was the royal entrance to the Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in India at that time. The victorious arched gateway was constructed by the Mughal Emperor Akbar after he overpowered the king of Khandesh or Gujarat in 1573.
This colossal gateway dominates the fabulous structure of the walled city of Fatehpur Sikri.
It is 40.84 m high and was constructed on a podium 13.52 m on the highest point of the ridge. This majestic structure is a finest specimen of Islamic architecture whose creation is based on semi octagonal plan with two small triple-storied wings on each side.
Carved in red sandstone with finely decorated white marble calligraphic inscriptions that adorn from the Quran on its front, chattris and pillars on its height.
It also houses three kiosks atop enveloped by 13 smaller domed kiosks. The smaller tower encasing the gateway wonderfully increases its grandeur.
