Mumtaz Mahal was the beloved wife of Shah Jahah, the famous Mughal Emperor. Mumtaz (1593-1631) was the daughter of a Persian nobleman Abdul Hasan Asaf Khan. In her remembrance, the emperor built the majestic monument-Taj Mahal.
Originally known as Arjumand Banu Begaum, Mumtaz Mahal was a Muslim Persian Princess. According to history, it is said that Arjumand Banu was a Muslim girl who grew up into a beautiful lady. She was also the sister of Noor Jehan, who was the wife of the emperor Shah Jahan.
Based on history, Mumtaz Mahal used to sell silk and glass beads at her shop in the Meena Bazar. This is the private royal market linked to the harem meant for the royal women. Prince Khurram (the future Shah Jahan) met her at this market in 1607 and the love started. After his father consent, the royal wedding happened in May 1612 with great pump and show. Mumtaz Mahal got married at the age of 19 years.
Mumtaz Mahal was famous for her extraordinary beauty and elegance throughout the kingdom.
Her eye-catching beauty made the poets compose verses in her admiration. She was a concerned queen and assisted Emperor in his governance. She used to assist her husband all across his dominion.
This royal lady died in June 1631 in Burhanpur Madhya Pradesh after the delivery of her fourteen child, Shahzadi Gauhara Begum.
It is said that Shah Jahan promised her that he would build world's most spectacular monument in her memory. And he fulfilled her wishes by constructing the majestic Taj Mahal, which later on became one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
