Named after Sikander Lodi, Sikandra is the Akbar's tomb, located 3 km from Agra.. A structure with an ideal amalgamation of Hindu, Islamic, Christian and Buddhist, Sikandra is an architectural masterpiece. It is based on the secular learnings and religious benevolence.
Akbar, the third Mughal Emperor himself initiated its construction in around 1600 according to Tartary tradition to start the construction of one's tomb during he is alive. Akbar himself devised his own tomb and chosen a suitable site. He could not accomplish it and died. Then, his son Jehangir carried on the task and completed his tomb. He also made several modifications in the original plan to make the monument more spectacular.
The tomb has also three storied red sandstone minarets known for its inlay marble work on the four corners of the structure. The mausoleum boasts of its open terrace adorned with carved latticework screens.
The grave lies in the basement adorned with paintings in colourful golden, blue and green hues on the thick walls.
